Ragnaros is one of the oldest and most destructive beings tied to Azeroth. Known as the Firelord, he is not a mortal creature but an elemental force given will and purpose. His story spans the earliest age of the world, the rise of mortal civilizations, and multiple world-ending conflicts.
Origins in Primordial Azeroth
Before mortal races existed, Azeroth was ruled by chaotic elemental forces. Among these were four powerful Elemental Lords who governed the raw elements of the world: fire, air, earth, and water. Ragnaros ruled fire.
He served the Old Gods as a lieutenant during the era when the Old Gods dominated Azeroth. As Elemental Lord of Fire, he embodied destruction, heat, and volcanic upheaval.
When the Titans defeated the Old Gods and reshaped the world, the elemental lords were imprisoned within elemental planes to prevent further devastation. Ragnaros was bound within the Firelands, a blazing elemental realm connected to Azeroth.
The Firelands and His Dominion
Within the Firelands, Ragnaros ruled from Sulfuron Keep, commanding legions of fire elementals and molten creatures.
His power there was far greater than when manifesting in Azeroth’s physical world. The Firelands functioned as both prison and kingdom — he was contained, but still sovereign.
Summoning to Azeroth: The War of the Three Hammers
Ragnaros remained imprisoned for millennia until the War of the Three Hammers, a civil war among dwarf clans.
Sorcerer-Thane Thaurissan of the Dark Iron dwarves attempted to summon a powerful force to defeat rival clans. Instead, he summoned Ragnaros himself.
The summoning was catastrophic.
- Thaurissan was killed instantly by the unleashed power.
- Massive explosions shattered the Redridge Mountains.
- The eruption formed the volcanic region around Blackrock Mountain.
Ragnaros established himself deep within the mountain, creating the Molten Core, a fiery nexus linking Azeroth to the Firelands.
He enslaved the Dark Iron dwarves and ruled Blackrock Mountain for centuries.
Rule Over Blackrock Mountain
For over two hundred years, Ragnaros dominated the region beneath Blackrock Mountain.
His domain included:
- the Molten Core
- fire elemental armies
- enslaved Dark Iron dwarves
- lieutenants such as Majordomo Executus
The Molten Core itself functioned as a portal allowing fire elementals to enter Azeroth.
Ragnaros’s presence destabilized the region, transforming it into a volcanic wasteland and solidifying his influence over the Dark Iron clan.
Conflict with Azeroth’s Forces
Ragnaros’s rule threatened nearby regions and destabilized elemental balance. Opposing elemental forces, particularly the Hydraxian Waterlords, sought to counter him.
Eventually, adventurers allied with these forces invaded the Molten Core.
During the Molten Core raid events, Ragnaros was defeated and banished back to the Firelands rather than destroyed.
Because elementals originate from elemental planes, destroying their manifestation only sends them back to their realm.
Return to the Firelands
After his defeat in Molten Core, Ragnaros returned to Sulfuron Keep within the Firelands.
From there, he rebuilt his strength and prepared to strike again.
Alliance with Deathwing and the Old Gods
During the Cataclysm, Ragnaros aligned himself with Deathwing and the forces of the Old Gods in the effort to bring about the Hour of Twilight, a prophesied destruction of Azeroth.
This alliance ended earlier rivalries and unified elemental and twilight forces.
Assault on Mount Hyjal
Ragnaros launched a full-scale invasion of Mount Hyjal in an attempt to burn the regrowing World Tree, Nordrassil.
His forces pushed into Hyjal and the surrounding regions, threatening to ignite the world.
Guardians of Hyjal, including druidic forces and mortal champions, resisted the invasion and forced his armies back into the Firelands.
The Firelands War
Azeroth’s defenders carried the fight into the Firelands itself. Within his elemental domain, Ragnaros fought at full strength.
The Firelands campaign culminated in a direct confrontation inside Sulfuron Keep, where champions defeated the Firelord within his own realm.
Unlike his Molten Core defeat, this battle destroyed his physical form within his native plane.
